The method involves utilising equipment installed in the vehicle and connected to the radiotelephone and common antenna. The micro-transmitter (5) operates at the radiotelephone frequency when connected to the battery (6) by an electronic controller (7) responsive to reception (8) of an activating telephone call or encoded signal. A calculator (9) with random-access memory (10) analyses the received signal and instigates transmission of signals for engaging the radiotelephone network and for identifying the vehicle and the portion of the network in which it is situated.
