PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound which is a chemical intermediate important as a raw material for various solvents, pharmaceuticals, rubber chemicals, surfactants, etc., by continuously using a zeolite catalyst over a long period while suppressing the lowering of the catalytic activity. SOLUTION: The objective methylamine is produced by contacting methanol and ammonia, a methanol-methylamine mixture and ammonia or methylamine mixture and ammonia with a zeolite catalyst layer. Preferably at least two zeolite catalyst layers are arranged in series and the reaction is carried out while keeping the temperature difference between the inlet and the outlet of each zeolite catalyst layer within the range of 5-70 deg.C. The zeolite catalyst is e.g. mordenite, chabazite or levynite. |
