Illumination system (1) having an active layer (3) which comprises an electroluminescent material. The layer (3) is present between an optically transparent electrode layer (5) and a reflective electrode layer (7). A reflective polarizer (11) is present at a side (9) of the transparent electrode layer (7) facing away from the active layer (3). The invention also relates to a flat-panel picture display device (17) provided with such an illumination system (1).
