PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document retrieving method and a device capable of easily executing more developed retrieval by generating the phonogram of one language from that of the other language and using a phonogram string obtained from these phonograms as a retrieving keyword. SOLUTION: The document retrieving device is provided with an input device 1, a table 2, a control device 3, an external storage 4, and a display device 5. The control device 3 extracts a phonogram string to be substituted from input keyword information inputted from the device 1, divides the displayed phonogram string into units such as syllables by the use of an internal phonogram code table e.g. substitutes the phonogram string of the other language for that of the original language in each divided unit by the use of a phonogram correspondence table to prepare a new retrieving keyword.
