Vertical welding in protective gas with strip electrode fed horizontally

In a method of vertically welding of components (8) in protective gas with a strip electrode (1) fed horizontally, according to which the arc melts joint flanks, the front of the joint is covered by a copper shoe (2), while a weld pool support (3, 4) is located at the rear of the joint. The novelties are that: (a) dependent on the electrode and joint geometries, as well as the welding parameters, an arc (6) is formed which constitutes a quasi-linearly acting heat source producing a weld pool with only slight overheating; (b) the strip melting angle approximates the joint edge divergence angle, and is less than or equal to 40 deg ; (c) the joint edge divergence angle is pref. 0-25 deg ; (d) the ratio of the width to thickness of the strip electrode is 1-8; and (e) the electrode width is given by the following equation: bb=2.s.tg<^>a/2+bsp-K where:
