The invention concerns a method and device for connecting wire ends (11, 12) of a hoop casing for packing material (3). The bracing wire (2) is passed around the packing material (3), pulled taut and cut off, the wire ends (11, 12) then being pressed flush together under high pressure and welded by the application of a welding current. In this respect the wire ends (11, 12) are pressed together with a controllable and substantially constant pressure at least before and/or during the welding process. For this purpose, a bracing device (8) with a feed drive (9) comprising a pressure-control system with pressure stages (19, 20) preferably of at least two different levels is provided.
