A process for the preparation of caprolactam by reacting cyclohexanone oxime with a cationic or nonionic surfactant and a cosurfactant in dilute sulfuric acid at a temperature in the range of 15 DEG C. to 40 DEG C., neutralizing excess acid present in the solution and recovering the caprolactam from the solution by filtration.
