PURPOSE: To obtain a lubricant, containing a polyether represented by a specified formula having a specified number-average molecular weight and a specific TU value, improved in solubility in mineral oils at low temperatures, having a low friction coefficient, hardly causing a wear track and good in lubricity. CONSTITUTION: This lubricant comprises a polyether, represented by formula I R<1> is a 1-22C alkyl or alkenyl; E is ethylene; A is a 3-4C alkylene; X is O atom, S atom or COO; Y is H, R<2> or R<3> CO (R<2> and R<3> are each a 1-22C alkyl or alkenyl); (m) is 0-100; (n) is 20-300; with preferably 0.8-1.0 [n/(m+n)] and [(EO)m /(AO)n ] represents a random addition or a block addition} and having >=2000 number-average molecular weight and a TU value satisfying formula II [(z) is the number average molecular weight; (y) is a TU value (mequiv./g), with the proviso that (y) is a value obtained by subtracting a TU value characteristic of R<1> when R<1> has the value. The polyol is preferably obtained by keeping, for example, an alkylene oxide at 80-120 deg.C under a pressure of 2-6kg/cm<2> with cesium hydroxide as a catalyst for addition polymerization reaction. |
