Cosmetic or dermatologic compositions with controlled release of the active agent containing a photoconvertible carotenoid

The use of a photo-convertible carotenoid of formula (I) for the cosmetic treatment of the skin to protect it from photo-ageing, is new. R1, R2 = one of groups of formulae (II) - (IV), at least one of R1 and R2 being a beta -ionone cpd. (II); R3, R4 = H, OH, carboxy, 1-4C alkoxy pref. MeO, or forms a carbonyl group with the ring C atom. Also claimed are cosmetic or dermatological controlled-release compsns. contg. cpds. of formula (I) which may be converted into retinol and retinoic acid or their isomers; in a cosmetically- or dermatologically-acceptable medium.
