A cat litter box assembly (10) comprises a rectangular litter box tray (12), an upstanding cover (14) removably secured on the walls (22, 24, 26) of the tray (12) and extending over and about a portion of the tray (12) rearwardly of the front wall (22) thereof, and a removable hood (16) pivotally mounted on the cover (14) between an extended position and a retracted position. The hood (16) defines an elongated forward edge (82) which, with the hood (16) in the extended position, is disposed forwardly of and above the front wall (22) of the tray (12) and cooperates therewith to define an elongated cat entry area (84) therebetween extending substantially the length of the front wall (22) of the tray (12). The front and rear tray walls (22, 24) are longer than the side walls (26), maximizing the width of the cat entry area (84) for the size of the tray (12). In the retracted position, the hood (16) is disposed interiorly of the cover (14) and in substantial juxtaposition therewith so as to provide unobstructed access to the interior of the tray (12). A filter element (18) is mounted in the upper end of the cover (14). The cover (14) and the hood (16) are provided with mating sealing members (92, 94) which are in sealing engagement when the hood (16) is in its extended position, preventing odors from escaping therebetween.
