The roll consists of a stationary core (1) with cooling water supply and removal means and a rotatable sleeve (2) which is laterally sealed, and rests on the load-bearing core. The roll is novel in that the central region of the core (1) is provided with an axial channel (5) with a slit-shaped opening (6) which extends towards the contact region (8) between the roll and the strip (9).
