A level control for the level of liquid in a dishwasher has a drainage trough (3) which is arranged below the bottom of the washing container and to which a strainer arrangement (4, 6) is assigned. Connected to the drainage trough (3) via a suction aperture (14) is a program-controlled circulation pump (11) for the washing liquid. Additionally, a water inlet valve (19) is provided, via which water is supplied if required when the circulation pump is running. In order to allow a simple construction of the control, the water inlet valve (19) is opened as long as and as soon as the liquid level in the drainage trough (3) is below a predetermined minimum operating level (21).

|
