PURPOSE: To obtain a portable telephone set which is good in usability by recording a caller's message in the speech storage device of an exchange in automatic answering mode and indicating the recording, and making a connection that enables a direct telephone talk through emergency dial operation when the caller has an urgent message. CONSTITUTION: A CPU 2 decides termination with data obtained from a signal processor 3 and similarly recognizes the frequency of recording of a message from the caller, e.g. a telephone set 15 which is transferred from the exchange 12 and recorded in the speech storage device 14 with data obtained from the signal processor 3. When the automatic answering mode of the portable telephone set 1 is reset, the exchange 12 decides that the automatic answering mode is not set any more, reproduces the message recorded in the speech storage device 14, and sends it to the portable telephone set 1. When the owner of the portable telephone set 1 adds an urgent dial number, the exchange 12 calls the portable telephone set 1 directly without sending an answering message out to the caller even in the automatic answering mode.
