A lock keep has a part (15) which partially defines a recess (13) which is adapted to receive a bolt of a lock. The part (15) cooperates with a spring arrangement (27), in such a way that when the bolt of the lock is in the recess (13) and a force is applied to the part (15) by the bolt, then the part (15) moves and the spring arrangement (27) absorbs and dissipates the energy transferred. Hence, the energy is dissipated through the spring arrangement and not through a surround in which the lock keep is fitted, for example, a door frame, thereby limiting damage to the door frame and reducing the likelihood of an intruder being able to force open a locked door.
