Route selection computer using cartographic data in motor vehicles

The route selection computer is loaded with a route planning algorithm associated with a cartographic database holding data on roadways in a particular geographic zone. A reference point is entered and used to allow the routing algorithm to determine possible paths from the reference point. The paths are displayed on a map. The cartographic data holds peaks corresponding to road junctions, and the computer creates for each peak a potential that is a function of the distance from the reference point. Zones are formed by associating peaks of the same class, determined by their potential and a zone parameter. The cartographic data includes arcs corresponding to link roads between the road junctions. The zone determination associates classes of peaks with corresponding arcs.
