<p>PURPOSE: To make a multiplex level high by executing surface orientation in such a manner that the cumulative molecular twist of a specific size is given in a uniform inclination direction and respectively specifying the inclination generated by the surface orientation and the thickness of a cell. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal device has a cholesteric material layer 2 having <=20μm thickness and having positive dielectric anisotropy between cell wall parts 3 and 4. The wall parts 3, 4 are subjected to a surface treatment in such a manner that the liquid crystal molecules are oriented to a homogeneous state with inclination. The surface orientation is adapted to the cholesteric material in such a manner that the cumulative molecular twist larger thanπradian and smaller than 2πradian is given in the uniform inclination direction. The device has r.m.s. multiplex drive, has a steep transmission-voltage characteristic and is so formed that the respective addressable elements are directly changed over between a light transparent state and a nontransparent state. The surface orientation of at least one cell wall parts generates the inclination larger than 5 deg. and the value obtd. by dividing the thickness of the cell by the pitch of the cholesteric material is <=1.</p> |
