According to the invention, to detect the presence of ultrasonic wave energy at a selected location within a material volume, a device and a method are proposed which provide a visible indication which indicates the ultrasonic wave energy at the selected location and specific properties of the detected ultrasonic wave energy, in that there is coupled to the material volume at the selected location a column of a fluid medium which responds to ultrasonic wave energy and has visible particles suspended therein which respond to ultrasonic wave energy, so that corresponding ultrasonic wave energy is induced in the column, as a result of which the particles in the column are suspended and arranged in a visible pattern, so that the visible representation which indicates the ultrasonic wave energy at the selected location is established.
