In order to sever lithium which is present in the form of a plate, it is fixed such that it cannot move and split along the desired line of separation. For example, this can be carried out by means of two pairs of clamping jaws (1a, 1b and/or 2a, 2b) which can respectively be moved in directions (4) away from one another and towards one another. The pairs (1a, 1b and/or 2a, 2b) of clamping jaws may, in their turn, be moved in directions (5) towards one another and away from one another. A lithium plate (3) is inserted between the pairs of clamping jaws in such a way that when the lithium plate has been clamped between the two pairs of clamping jaws and the pairs of clamping jaws have been moved apart, the lithium plate (3) is split along the desired severing line (10). <IMAGE>
