An isoxazole compound represented by general formula (I) or an acid-addition salt thereof, wherein R<1> represents hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl or cycloalkyl; R<2> represents hydrogen, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, a phenyl group which may have substituent(s) selected from the following substituent group A, or an aromatic heterocyclic group which may have substituent(s) selected from the following substituent group A; or alternatively R<1> and R<2> may be combined together to represent -CR<4> =CR<5>-CR<6> = CR<7>-, wherein R<4> through R<7> may be the same or different from one another and each represents hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halomethyl, lower alkylamino, lower alkanoylamino, hydroxy, nitro or amino. [Substituent group A] lower alkyl, hydroxy, lower alkoxy, halogen, nitro, amino, and lower alkylamino. The above compound has the effects of treating dementia, ameliorating the cerebral functions, and so forth.
