SUBSTITUTED PHENYLTHIOACETIC ACID

PURPOSE:To provide the subject new compound useful as an intermediate for compounds giving no chemical injuries problematic for main crops and having adequate herbicidal efficacy on various kinds of weeds. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula I (X is Cl or Br), e.g. 2-(5- carboxylmethylthio-4-chloro-2-fluorophenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-2H-indo le-1,3-dione. The compound of the formula I can be obtained by reaction in a solvent between an aminophenylthioacetic acid compound of formula II and 3,4,5,6- tetrahydrophthalic anhydride. The compound of the formula I is made to react with an alcohol of formula R<2>OH (R2 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, haloalkyl or alkoxycarbonylalkyl) in a solvent in the presence of a dehydrating agent and, if needed, a base to obtain a 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-2H-isoindole-1,3-dione derivative of formula III which gives herbicidal efficacy.
