A photosensitive compsn. based on a resin which is polymerisable by the action of incident luminous radiation, the compsn. also contg. a neutral, pref. non-fluorescent dye (I) which absorbs the exposure light and an initiator cpd. (II) for the polymerisation reaction which is activated by the emission of heat created by the absorption of incident light by the (I). (I) is chosen e.g. from xanthene dyes (e.g. Rose Bengal, phloxine, pyronine), azine dyes (phenosafranine), oxazine dyes (nile blue), thiazine dyes, polymethine dyes (neocyanine, pinacyanol), triphenylmethane dyes (crystal violet, methyl green), merocyanine dyes (quinaldine red), azo dyes (Sudan read, Sudan orange), anthraquinone dyes and metalliferous dyes (bis dimethylamine dithiobenzyl nickel). (II) is chosen e.g. from peroxides such as benzoyl peroxide, cyclohexane peroxide, acetylacetone peroxide, hydroperoxides and persalts such as myristyl peroxydicarbonate and 2-ethyl butyl perhexanoate, and azo cpds. such as 2,2-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile). USE/ADVANTAGE - The photosensitive compsns. are esp. useful as recording layers on write once, read many (WORM) type binary recording discs in which recording is carried out using a modulated coherent light beam. The presence of the (I) allows recording to be carried out successfully using sources of lower power output than previously, and esp. a simple diode laser operating in the wavelength region from the visible to the near infra red, and gives efficient controlled polymerisation of the resin exactly in the vicinity of the incident beam to give high spatial resolution. The compsns. are also suitable for use in the prodn. of recording layers for optical holographic elements.
