Acrylic and/or vinyl polymers and/or copolymers containing acidic groups in which 60% to 90% of the active acidic sites are neutralised with the magnesium ion, with a specific viscosity not exceeding 25 and with increased biodegradability, that is whose degradation after 36 days is higher than 50% according to the modified Sturm method. Application of these polymers to fields as diverse as paper, paints, plastics, petroleum, drilling fluids, water treatment, detergents, cosmetics, textiles, inks, leather, grinding and/or breaking up of minerals in water.
