Alumina prepared by the thermal decomposition of aluminium sulphate is useful in a catalyst at a temperature above 850 DEG C, especially for the treatment of the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine to combat air pollution. Alumina prepared in this way advantageously contains dopant which improves the retention of the surface area of the alumina on exposure to a temperature of 850 DEG C or above. Gibbsite is the preferred raw material from which to prepare the aluminium sulphate. |
