PURPOSE:To increase the contrast of the liquid crystal projector by increasing the contrast of the liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display device is so constituted that the angle theta between the axis of absorption of an incidence-side polarizing plate 11 and the axis of absorption of a projection-side polarizing plate 12 is different from the angle between the rubbing directions of two glass substrates between which liquid crystal is sandwiched. Further, the difference theta between the theta1 and theta2 is so set that 0<¦ theta¦<4. Further the liquid crystal projector is so constituted that the difference theta between the angle theta1 between the axis of absorption of the incidence-side polarizing plate 11 and the axis of absorption of the projection-side polarizing plate 12 and the angle theta2 between the rubbing directions of two glass substrates between which the liquid of plural liquid crystal panels are sandwiched are positive and negative, i.e., different in sign between light valves arranged at mirror symmetric positions and substantially equal in absolute value. |
