PURPOSE:To obtain a 4,4'-dialkylbiphenyl in high selectivity without causing problems of waste water treatment, corrosion of devices, etc., by alkylating a (4-alkyl)biphenyl in the presence of a phosphorus-containing catalyst having zeolite structure. CONSTITUTION:A biphenyl or a 4-alkylbiphenyl is reacted with an alkylating agent in the presence of a phosphorus-containing catalyst having zeolite structure, preferably one having 0.02-8wt.%, especially 0.1-5wt.% phosphorus in a liquid phase at 170-300 deg.C under 2-150kg/cm<2>G or in a vapor phase at 80-350 deg.C under 2-150kg/cm<2>G to give a 4-alkyl- and/or 4,4'-dialkylbiphenyl. The catalyst is prepared by modifying zeolite with phosphorus by immersion method or deposition method or synthesis in the presence of phosphorus at a stage of constituting zeolite structure. |
