A pulse combustor apparatus that includes an elongated combustion tube having upstream and downstream ends. An oxidizer intake valve is provided at the upstream end in fluid communication with the tube for supplying an oxidizer to the tube in the form of discrete pulses. A modulating system is provided for modulating the operating frequency of the oxidizer pulses over a substantial range of frequencies other than the natural operating frequency of the pulse combustor and a fuel system for adding fuel to the oxidizer pulses proximate the upstream end of the tube so that the fuel can be combusted to generate hot gas pulses which propagate through and exit from the tube at the downstream end, whereby the frequency of hot gas pulses can be varied with the modulating system over a substantial range of frequencies other than the natural operating frequency of the pulses combustor. A method for operating the above pulse combustor is also disclosed. |
