To produce a mesh structure of high tensile strength, a flat plastic starting material having a thickness of at least 0.75 mm and provided with a rectangular or square pattern of cut-outs or recesses is stretched in two directions perpendicular to one another. The biaxially stretched structure has oriented strands 17, 25 connected by oriented links 26 having oriented branches between the strands. The thinnest section of the links 26 have a thickness of not less than 75% of the thickness of the strands 17, 25, the thickest sections of the links 26 are thicker than the thinnest sections and thicker than the strands 17, 25, while the centre of the link 26 is not the thinnest section of the link. <IMAGE>
