PURPOSE:To make a connection with low loss even when a normal optical connector and fusion splicing connection technique are used by locally increasing the core diameter of an end surface part which is small in core diameter and then connecting two optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:A small-diameter core optical fiber 1 is a dopant added quartz optical fiber which has its core doped so as to increase the refractive index of the core 1a or dopant added quartz optical fiber which has its clad doped so as to increase the refractive index of the clad. The optical fiber 1 which is small in core diameter between two optical fibers 1 and 2 is heated locally within a temperature range wherein the dopant is diffused, but the optical fiber is not fused, thereby increasing the core diameter of the periphery of the heated part. Then the two optical fibers are connected to each other. Consequently, the optical fibers to be connected vary in spot size continuously at their connection point, so the optical fibers can be connected with low loss. |
