PURPOSE:To form a thin film of a diacetylene polymer high in polymerization degree, enhanced in the mobility of adsorbed molecules in a monomolecular layer, and decreased in strains due to polymerization with high efficiency by substituting an oxygen atom on the silane surfactant long straight hydrocarbon chain having adsorptive diacetylene groups for the CH2 group on each of some parts of the chain. CONSTITUTION:The ultrathin film of the diacetylene polymer having conjugated divinylene series -(CH=CH-CH=CH)n- is prepared by immersing a substrate hydrophilic on the surface in a nonaqueous organic solvent dissolving a sub stance having a divinylene, -O-, and -(SiCl)= groups, forming the molecule of this substance on the substrate by the chemical absorption method, and then, polymerizing the divinylene parts of the obtained monomolecular film by irradiation with ultraviolet rays. The optical recording medium is obtained by using a substance having the diacetylene group and an -(SiCl)= group substituted by -(CH=CH2) on the molecule terminal and irradiating it with ultraviolet rays, and converting the -(CH=CH2) group to -(CH2CH2OH), and laminating it on the ultrathin film obtained before.
