The invention is a timber dog (cramp iron, bench stop), that is to say an accessory used to hold a piece (7) on a workbench (8) firmly whilst it is being worked. The invented timber dog is composed of a cylindrical body (1) which allows clamping right around the hole in the workbench into which it is driven, and of a bracket (2) equipped with a progressive clamping device (3 to 6). The latter prevents the use of a mallet blow which is necessary for conventional timber dogs, and which progressively damages the workbench resulting from intense friction of the timber dog body on the edges of the hole which receives it. This timber dog, according to the invention, is particularly intended for joiners, and particularly for "DIY enthusiasts" who do not work on workbenches constructed from hardwood. <IMAGE>
