Optical resolution of (+/-)-1-methyl-3-phenylpropylamine can be conducted by using an optically active compound represented by formula (I), wherein n is 0 to 3 and R<1> represents hydrogen. A compound wherein n is 2 or 3 and R<1> represents hydrogen or C1 to C3 alkyl is new.
