Roller-bearing elements are case hardened by: carburising in e.g. C3H8, at about 970 deg.C; cooling to about 300 deg.C in an inert gas stream; holdinG at 300 deg.C in the inert gas; heating to hardening temp.; austenising in the carburisation layer; and quenching to a surface hardness of 60-64 HRC. The holding time at 300 deg.C is pref. at least 1 hr.
