The accelerometer has a magnet attached to a soft iron carrying body with two connected arms and sensors that detect signals caused by eddy currents arising as a result of a change in the direction of the measurement material. One of the two arms (3,4) carries two poles (5,6), each with a sensor winding (9,10) with pole shoes (7,8) on the ends facing the measurement material forming magnetic field collectors. The poles form a narrow gap perpendicular to the direction of motion of the measurement material. A magnet (14,16a,16b) is mounted in a central recess in one arm and/or in recesses in each pole shoe.
