A monochrome cathode ray tube incorporates an electron gun featuring a focusing electrode (40) having an upper cup-shaped portion (42) comprising a top cylindrical sidewall portion (43) and a lower inwardly tapering sidewall portion (44) connecting to a flat bottom portion (45). The top cylindrical sidewall portion (43) being nearer to the accelerating electrode (50) than the rest of the focusing electrode. In an embodiment the cup-shaped portion (42) is supported by an elongated cylindrical base portion (41) having a diameter from about 44 to 48 percent of the diameter of the upper cylindrical portion (43) of the cup. The electron gun is particularly suitable for use in monochrome cathode ray tubes for projection color television.
