The invention relates to an ignition system comprising inductance means 12 connected with a spark plug 7 and a capacitor 9, discharge of the capacitor generating a voltage in the inductance means to fire the spark plug. Switching means 16 is operable to control the time of discharge of the capacitor and thereby control the initiation of spark plug firing. The system comprises a magnet 6 carried by a movable part 5 on the engine for motion in timed relation to the engine and a core 15 which co-operates with the magnet and which is in flux linking relationship with at least part of the inductance means, for generating a voltage in the latter, the core being so arranged with respect to the magnet that such voltage is generated immediately following discharge of the capacitor so that it provides for prolongation of the period of spark plug firing when the voltage required to maintain spark plug firing is low. In a modification (not shown) the ignition coil windings 13, 14 are on a separate core and a separate winding and core are associated with the magnet 6. |
