A belt conveyor intended for the transport of bulk material is equipped with a decentralised drive system which comprises linear motor drives arranged on the underside of the conveyor belt and permanent magnets integrated over the length of the conveyor belt in the drive and guide rail of the latter. By this means, a drive system having a rectilinear movement of the conveyor belt is provided, so that the latter can be satisfactorily operated evenly and uniformly, with and without loading even over long conveying distances. In particular when the permanent magnets are assigned to a web-shaped guide element arranged below the conveyor belt, such a belt conveyor can be guided satisfactorily about curves so that the subdivision and frequent construction of transfers, which are at present still necessary, are not required. Rows of permanent magnets and vertically positioned stators or linear motors additionally placed in the belt cover make it possible, furthermore, for the remaining belt to lift up off the supporting rollers so that floating of the belt on a magnetic-force cushion leads to a low-friction operation. <IMAGE>
