It is known to provide washing processes which, with an otherwise unchanged programme cycle, can be carried out with or without a prewash. Processes carried out without a prewash can lead to an unsatisfactory washing result on account of the reduced mechanical action on the laundry. In the process according to the invention, in process (B) for washing without a prewash the main washing cycle (2) is extended in a simple way essentially by the amount of a time duration (T4) corresponding to a time duration (T1) for a prewashing cycle (1). The process according to the invention is especially suitable for the washing of laundry having a normal amount of soiling. <IMAGE>
