PURPOSE:To immediately and surely obtain an optimum color allocation for bringing a surface image of a sample to a color code display at every component, by performing a suitable arithmetic processing to a histogram of a mapping data obtained by scanning the surface of the sample. CONSTITUTION:By reading out a signal data by the first arithmetic part 2, a histogram A of a data level-to-the number of picture elements is generated, and stored in a histogram memory 3. In a smoothing circuit 41 of the second arithmetic part 4, a smoothing processing by a moving average method is performed to a histogram data read out of the histogram memory 3, by which the histogram A is smoothed and the number of valley parts B1, B2... is limited, and in a valley detecting part 42, the valley parts B1, B2... of the histogram A are detected by a differential calculation, and level values L1, L2... corresponding to these valley parts B1, B2... are stored in a level value storage part 5. Subsequently, by an output of a color converting circuit 6, a color image of the surface of a sample is displayed on a color CRT 7. In such a way, a single color can be allowed to correspond exactly at every peak corresponding to each phase of the sample, and an optimum color allocation is obtained easily.
