PURPOSE:To detect fouling of electrodes accurately, by a method wherein a pair of current electrodes is immersed into a solution to be measured and a pair of voltage electrodes is arranged in a current distribution are thereof to measure voltage between the current electrodes and that between the voltage electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Current electrodes 3 and 5 are immersed into a solution 4 to be measured and current flows from a current source 1. Voltage electrodes 6 and 7 are arranged in a current distribution area between the electrodes 3 and 5. A voltage V0 is generated between the voltage electrodes 6 and 7 by current between the current electrodes 3 and 5, measured with a voltmeter 10 and inputted into a calculation means 11 to control current from the current source 1 so that it is kept constant. Conductivity of the solution 4 being measured is determined by the circulation means 11. Here, when the current electrodes 3 and 5 are fouled, resistance increases and hence, the ratio is computed between the voltage between the electrodes 3 and 5 as measured with a voltmeter 12 and the voltage V0 and compared with a set value to detect foul from the resulting deviation. This enables detection of abnormality of resistance between the electrodes and the solution being measured thereby preventing possible measuring errors with the detection of fouling of electrodes.
