PURPOSE:To eliminate the influence of opposite-polarity pulses at the time writing by applying pulses which have the opposite polarity from a write voltage and has an amplitude smaller than a specific ratio of the amplitude of the write voltage right before the write voltage is applied. CONSTITUTION:The driving part of a ferroelectric liquid crystal panel 71 is provided with a scanning-side driving circuit 72 and a signal-side driving circuit 73, the circuit 72 outputs scanning signals S1, S2..., and the circuit 73 outputs information signals I1, I2.... In this constitution, a pulse voltage corresponding to a clear voltage having the opposite polarity from this write voltage is applied right before the write voltage is applied to picture elements on scanning electrodes selected by applying a scanning signal. In this case, the amplitude of an opposite-polarity front pulse is set to 1/2, preferably <=1/3 the amplitude of the write pulses. Consequently, the influence of the opposite-polarity front pulse can be minimized and a driving voltage margin can be increased.
