PURPOSE:To improve running durability and electromagnetic conversion characteristic by incorporating an aluminum component at 1-6wt% in weight in terms of metal into fine ferromagnetic metal powder and selecting an essential component of a polishing material for a magnetic layer from alpha-alumina, chromium oxide, silicon carbide, and silicon nitride. CONSTITUTION:The fine ferromagnetic metal powder contains the aluminum component at 1-6wt% in weight in terms of metal and the essential component of the polishing agent for the magnetic layer is selected from the alpha-alumina, chromium oxide, silicon carbide, and silicon nitride. The amt. of the polishing agent in the magnetic layer is decreased and the amt. of the fine ferromagnetic metal powder is increased if the fine ferromagnetic metal powder increased in the hardness in the above-mentioned manner is used in combination with the polishing agent having the particularly high hardness. The magnetic recording medium such as magnetic tape obtd. in such a manner exhibits the high running durability and the excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristic.
