The suction valve for air compressors comprises a flexible strip 1 which is planar at rest, and a seat made up of a ramp 3 which diverges with respect to the thin strip. During starting, for as long as the piston has not reached its operating speed, and the internal pressure of the cylinder does not exceed the back pressure in the tank and of the delivery valve force, the sucked air may escape from the cylinder through the suction valve. The resistance upon starting is thus low, so that the drive motor for the compressor may easily get up to speed. As the normal speed is approached, dynamic pressure applies the thin strip 1 onto its seat, so as to close the suction valve, and operation then becomes normal. <IMAGE>
