The apparatus automatically locks or unlocks the parking brake in the automobile. The apparatus operates a parking brake lever by an operation/release button of a steering wheel, and automatically releases the parking brake if a driver operates a transmission gear though he does not release the parking brake. The apparatus comprises: the parking brake lever(1) rotating in the center of a axle rod(2); a shape memory alloy(3) supporting the parking brake lever(1); a return spring(4) supporting the the parking brake lever(1) in the direction opposite to the shape memory alloy(3); a contact switch(SW3) cpntacting with a protrusiong(1a) of the brake lever(1); a solenoid(5), operated by a release switch(SW2), having a hook(5a); an actuation switch(SW1) expanding the shape memory alloy(3).
