PURPOSE:To reduce the dictionary modifying work of an operator, by starting the tracking of stroke from the starting point indicated by the operator and stopping the tracking upon finding of a branch point or an end point of a picture element thereafter continuing the tracking of stroke in an indicated direction, or registering the stroke based upon a next command from the operator. CONSTITUTION:When an operator selects a menu for forming a character dictionary, an outline pattern previously inputted in a data memory 50 is displayed through a CPU 30 onto a display 60, and if registration of all strokes has not completed. input of a starting point is commanded to the operator. When the tracking of stroke proceeds to arrive at a branch point or an end point of a black picture element, it is indicated to the operator whether the tracking of the stroke should be finished or not, and if the finish of tracking is inputted, that stroke is resistered in a character dictionary 70. In such a manner, registration of mixed strokes is enabled by requesting an indication from the operator, further unregistration miss can be prevented by finding a unregistered storke through matching processing with an original character after tracking of stroke.
