L-Tryptophan is prepd. by the fermentation of E. coli W 3110 or its mutant, E. coli KCTC 8164P. Thus, the 2nd stage culture of E,coliKCTC8164Pis inoculated into the medium contg. 50 glucose, 8NH4Cl, 1,2 Na-citrate, 1.0 MgCl2, 0.015 FeCl2, 1.0 yeast ext., 3.0 K2HPO4, 0.4 K2SO4, 0.1 phenylalanine, 0.1 tyrosine, 2.0 anthranilic acid and trace element per 1 l distld. water, and cultivated at 35≦̸C for 36hr with 1 vvm aeration and 800 rpm agitation to give 13.6 g/l of L-tryptophan.
