NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 1-15C aliphatic alkyl or alkoxy; M is center metal). EXAMPLE:Bis[1,2-di(p-n-nonyloxyphenyl)ethylene-1,2-dithione]nickel. USE:A discotic liquid crystal phase substance having high electrical conductivity and electrical conduction anisotropy. PREPARATION:The objective compound can be produced e.g. by (1) etherifying p-bromophenol with a bromoalkane to obtain a p-substituted bromobenzene of formula II, (2) converting the compound to a Grignard reagent of formula III, (3) reacting the reagent with trans-1,2-dichloroethylene in the presence of diphenylphosphoethane complex of nickel chloride to obtain a stilbene derivative of formula IV, (4) oxidizing the derivative with selenium dioxide, etc., to a benzyl derivative of formula V and (5) reacting the product with phosphorus pentasulfide and then with a metal salt such as nickel chloride.
