PURPOSE:To obtain a coating agent which is heat-resistant, fire-resistant, weather-resistant and non-smoking, does not require any post-treatment and has a long pot life, by blending an alkali metal silicate or colloidal silica with an alkali metal titanate as a film-forming aid. CONSTITUTION:A coating agent is obtd. by blending at least one member (a) selected from among alkali metal silicates and colloidal silica with at least one member (b) selected from among alkali metal titanates having the formula (wherein M is an alkali metal and n is 6 or 8). pref. about 1.4-70pts.wt. component (b) per 100pts.wt. component (a) is used. A small amount of a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymer (e.g., polyvinyl alcohol) may be used together with the coating agent. As the color pigment, mineral pigments (e.g., zinc white) are preferred. Talc, mica, clay, calcium carbonate, etc., may be used as extender pigments according to purpose.
