A device for screening or classifying heaped material, in particular refuse, has a movable screening element provided on a stationary frame, with the interposition of restrictively movable suspensions. The aim is to modify the device such that heaped material of an extremely varied composition can be screened or classified in a relatively simple manner with high efficiency. A further aim is for the device to be as compact as possible. For this purpose, a plurality of transverse walls (16) or the like which extend parallel at a distance from one another and cross the conveying direction (x) are mounted on the frame (13) on the one hand and on the other hand are joined to a frame (22) or the like which is arranged at a distance (26) from the frame and has the drive (36, 37) such that the upper edges (19) of the transverse walls are offset in height in the manner of steps and are overlapped by one screening device (40, 41) in each case, which projects from that transverse wall disposed upstream in the conveying direction (x), at least one screening element (43) of material of limited flexibility extending below the screening device (40 and 50) of a transverse wall, which is clamped at one side, and being adjoined to the two adjacent transverse walls. <IMAGE>
