PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic recording medium having a good over-rite characteristic, high recording density and output and excellent magnetic characteristic and running durability by having a magnetic layer contg. planar magnetic powder and binder on a base and specifying the vertical squareness ratio, coercive force in the perpendicular direction of the medium and the film thickness of the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium has the magnetic layer contg. the hexagonal system planar magnetic powder and binder. More specifically the medium has the magnetic layer contg. the planar magnetic powder having <=0.2mum, more preferably 0.02-0.1mum average grain size and 2-6, more preferably 2-4 average planar ratio and the binder on the base. The vertical squareness ratio of the medium is 0.5-0.75, more preferably 0.5-0.7, the coercive force in the perpendicular direction is <=800Oe, more particularly preferably 550-750Oe and the film thickness of the magnetic layer is <=1.8mum, more preferably 0.4-1.4mum.
