A bacteriophage is added in order to combat the formation of sediment and slime caused by bacteria, which in turn detracts from the quality of the paper or cardboard being produced, and involves the addition of a phage of tailed A or B series of the particular bacterium isolated. Once the correct bacteriophage has been determined, and most frequency this is related to the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae, it is added to the process water where it infects its hot bacterium, which commences to multiply it. When a suitable number of phages have been produced within a bacterium cell, the cell wall splits with the aid of lysozyme enzymes. This leads to the host bacterium being destroyed, and new phages are liberated to infect in turn fresh host bacteria in a limited chain reaction. |
